Shapes by Kambium: The Story Behind an Organic Electronic Track on Beatroom 02
The Story Behind the Track "Shapes"
In the autumn of 2014, a unique musical encounter took place between two artists: Kromproom and Jamick. This meeting, held in Jamick's studio, was not only the birthplace of several sonic ideas but also marked the genesis of their collaborative project—Kambium.
The Meaning Behind "Kambium"
The name "Kambium" is more than just a label; it is a metaphor deeply rooted in nature. In botany, cambium (or "miazga" in Polish) is the secondary meristematic tissue in plants responsible for secondary growth in thickness. Situated between the phloem and the wood, cambium continually produces new layers of wood inward and phloem outward, enabling the plant to grow season after season. This biological process became a powerful symbol for the duo, representing organic, layered growth through musical creativity. Just as cambium forms the annual rings in a tree trunk—each ring a testament to a year of growth—so too do the artists build their legacy, layer by layer, through sound.
The Birth of "Shapes"
During their marathon recording session, Kromproom and Jamick generated a number of musical sketches. Among these, one stood out: "Shapes." This track, crafted entirely with synthesizers and recorded live—without pre-made loops or automation—captured the raw, organic energy of that creative moment. Over time, "Shapes" survived as one of the most complete and resonant pieces from those sessions.
Years later, while revisiting their archives, Kromproom decided to breathe new life into "Shapes," refining its production and shaping it into its final form. Together with Jamick, they agreed that this track deserved to see the light of day. Although Kambium did not continue with further recording sessions, "Shapes" proved strong enough to tell its own story—a sonic "ring" rediscovered and brought into the present.
From Studio to Compilatoni
"Shapes" is set to be released on the upcoming compilation "Beatroom 02" by Kromp Room Records. The track stands as a testament to the duo's creative synergy and their ability to merge past with present, nature with technology, and analog with digital. Its pulsating, organic soundscape is a direct result of the live session, preserving the authenticity and spontaneity that defined the original recording.
A Musical Legacy
"Shapes" is more than just a track; it is a musical imprint of a singular, unrepeatable session—much like the growth rings in a tree. It serves as a reminder that not every artistic endeavor needs to be part of a long-term project to be meaningful. Sometimes, a single piece of music is enough to tell an entire story.
